I started my e-commerce journey in 2017, driven by a need to contribute while raising three kids. With a 15-month-old at home and two in school, I found an inspiring mentor online and dove in, eager to create something of my own.
My first venture? Selling scarves. I modeled them with the help of patient neighbors and listed them online. My first (and only) sale went to my mother-in-law. Safe to say, scarves weren’t my thing. Next, I tried dresses. I sourced beautiful ones from Fashiongo.com, took more photos with my incredibly supportive neighbors, and… still couldn’t sell them. Eventually, I gave most of them away.
Over the next two years, I kept experimenting. I tried shoes (which actually sold pretty well!) and farmhouse decor (which didn’t resonate—I’m just not into shabby chic). After spending almost $5,000 chasing this dream, I discovered dropshipping, and that’s when things finally clicked.
In 2019, I launched The Room Outdoors, selling pergolas and gazebos. My mentor wasn’t thrilled with the idea, but I trusted my instincts. With my husband’s support, the business took off, and I sold it in 2020 for a solid profit. After that, I transitioned into real estate. (And Etsy, and physical products, digital, and more!)
Here’s what I learned through it all: finding your niche is a personal journey. My mentor was incredible, but she couldn’t tailor her advice to every person in her group of 3,000. She focused on her stars—like Megan, who’s thriving in fashion. But I realized I wasn’t Megan. I needed to carve my own path.
And you? You’re not Megan, either. Your journey is yours, and your brand should reflect that. That’s why I’m here—to help you create a digital space that feels authentic to who you are and supports where you’re going.
